New York City is where I grew up and have lived the longest. But I still have a lot to learn about, well, Greenwich Village for example. Here is some of what I found this weekend while walking the length of Charles Street from the Hudson River to Greenwich Avenue.
135 Charles, The Gendarme. Now apartments, originally the 9th Precinct stationhouse. They don’t design police buildings like this anymore. 121 Charles, 200-year-old farmhouse once tenanted by Margaret Wise Brown (“Goodnight Moon,” “Runaway Bunny” etc.) when it was on the Upper East Side. PLAQUE RECALLING A WORLD WAR TWO-ERA RENTER Congregation Darech Amuno, established in 1838 by Orthodox Jews from Holland. They moved here (remodeling an old building) in 1912. 1925-27 RESIDENCE OF JAMES M. CAIN, WHEN THE FUTURE AUTHOR OF “THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE” WAS, IMPROBABLY, WRITING EDITORIALS FOR THE NEW YORK WORLD UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF WALTER LIPPMANN.
Onetime Charles Streeters also include Sinclair Lewis and Fiorello LaGuardia.
Interesting post. Are you aware that my Aunt Helen [Silvia’s older sister] lived in the building on Jane Street to which Alexander Hamilton repaired after his fatal duel?
